“Exquisitely beautiful, strangely moving hour of object theatre.” Three Weeks, Edinburgh
We use it every day without a second thought, the most common form of plastic – polystyrene. In this remarkable piece of visual theatre, Andrea Salustri explores its possibilities to the point it becomes alive and protagonist of the events on stage. As an almost unseen animator he shows how we engage with objects, allowing them their own performing artistry, creating magic in front of our eyes. No narrative or weighty metaphors here, just extraordinary sensory evocations. You have to see it to believe.
“Humankind’s dance with plastics will define our existence on this planet, and Salustri’s thoughtful object-choreography captures this tension with creativity and grace.” Scotsman
Now based in Berlin, Italian born Andrea Salustri trained as a juggler in Rome before studying dance and choreography in Berlin. A Laureate of the circusnext European Circus Label, Materia was a hit at the 2022 Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
“As much as it can be said that objects can perform, these objects perform majestically. Coming out of the era where digital spaces and the internet were the only way to enjoy theatre, Materia reminds us how some sights and sounds need to be experienced in the flesh to work their magic.” Puppet Animation Scotland
