Expressive Bodies: Improvisation and Contemporary Dance Workshop

25 Feb 2025 - 15 Apr 2025

Tuesday classes

In this 8-week workshop, you are invited to explore your creative body through a number of embodied practices. In each session, we will explore individual and group movement facilitated through imaginative instructions based on a specific theme, including introspection, communication, rhythm and playfulness.

For us, movement is a way to experiment with the body as a site of sensation, emotion, memory and creativity. We will encourage you to inhabit your body through those various layers. Using contemporary dance technique, improvisational tasks and rhythmical explorations, this workshop will help you connect to your body awareness, physical stamina, flexibility, and confidence in movement.

What can I expect and what will I learn?

You can expect to explore dance sequences to music, develop your own ideas in movement and share a creative space with others. Each session will start with an introduction. This will be followed by a physical warm-up, leading into creative movement explorations, lasting about 45-50 minutes. At the end, there will be time for group reflections through conversations and other artistic mediums such as writing and drawing.

You will learn:

  • embodied movement practices which encourage body awareness
  • rhythmical dance explorations
  • improvisational techniques which allow you to discover your uniqueness in movement
  • sharing creative movement with others through group exercises
  • improved flexibility and stamina

Who is this workshop for?

Expressive Bodies is for anyone with a curiosity to explore their bodies through movement, ranging from people with dance and movement experience to beginners.
