Shards of Light

National Centre For Circus Arts

BA Ensemble Production 2022

Exploding confidently on to the stage, the cast of Shards of Light enter a polished show-time world of hyper-normality. How long will they sustain this illusion? When will the cracks appear?

Combining circus, physical theatre, movement and music, the hugely talented and multi-skilled cast humorously unpick what lies beneath their shiny outside personas; exploring fears, shadows and how to make sense of this crazy world; where beauty and darkness meet in the ripples of the lake. How will we escape nightmares, the dark forest and the hall of mirrors to become our diamond selves?

Shards of Light is devised and created by the 3rd BA students from National Centre for Circus Arts (NCCA) with the creative team and directed by Jacky Crosher.

“Jacky Crosher is an influential director and creator of circus theatre with an optimistic and surreal vision on the world in which we find ourselves” Bristol Voice on In Focus

“A brilliant piece of immersive theatre, set in some beautiful surroundings ….great to see some live art again” Lucy Pedlar – Trymwood Gallery on A Moving Grove

Using the starting idea of light shining on a shard of glass, the cast and creative team have taken images, metaphors and their own stories to devise this special unique set of performances. These are especially heightened by the circumstances in which everyone has found themselves since 2020 and the internal and external struggles this has produced.

“Sometimes in the creation space the voices around us and the stories they offer are the most exciting inspiration” Jacky Crosher on the process of directing
