Last weekend, I went to David Hockney’s current show, “A Year in Normandie and Some Other Thoughts about Painting” at the Serpentine North gallery.
Just glancing at his art makes me happy 🙂
And that’s exactly what inspired our theme this time: let’s draw JOY, along with some good mood live music + life model, inspiring conversations with new and old friends, under the beautiful arch of Jacksons Lane Arts Centre, at the start of London’s flowery, rainy spring of longer daylight, brighter evenings. 🌸☺️🐝
A piece of art that makes people happy often uses bright colours, high-saturation colour palettes, dynamic lines and strokes, a playful composition, a sense of energy, care, and humour.
David Hockney’s art gets happier and happier as he gets older. This could be because his vision and hand precision are reducing, he is using a new medium (an iPad), or because he is more and more actively looking for JOY in nature, humans, and everyday chores as he gains wisdom through years.
I hope that by going through this session together, we all get inspired to see JOY, find JOY, experience JOY and create JOY MORE for ourselves and others in life!
Come and join us to celebrate spring, enjoy a good time, explore new things, and create memories for life together!
✨Here are some more sweet and relevant quotes from David Hockney:
- Do you remember, they can’t cancel the spring 🙂
- The world is very beautiful, if you look at it. But most people don’t look very much.
- I believe that the very process of looking can make a thing beautiful.
- If you are not playful you are not alive.
- It takes a long time to make it simple.
- If you see the world as beautiful, thrilling and mysterious, as I think I do, then you feel quite alive.
- You must plan to be spontaneous.
- What an artist is trying to do for people is bring them closer to something, because of course art is about sharing. You wouldn’t be an artist unless you wanted to share an experience, a thought.
- I draw flowers every day and send them to my friends so they get fresh blooms every morning.
- We don’t all see the same way at all. Even if I’m sitting looking at you, there is always the memory of you as well. And a memory is now. So someone who’s never met you before is seeing a different person. That’s bound to be the case. We all see something different. I assume most people don’t look very hard at anything.
- In art, new ways of seeing mean new ways of feeling; you can’t divorce the two, as, we are now aware, you cannot have time without space and space without time.
- I have always believed that art should be a deep pleasure…there is always, everywhere, an enormous amount of suffering. But I believe my duty as an artist is to overcome and alleviate the sterility of despair…New ways of seeing mean new ways of feeling… I do believe that painting can change the world.
- Art has to move you and design does not, unless it’s a good design for a bus.
- I think I’m greedy, but I’m not greedy for money – I think that can be a burden – I’m greedy for an exciting life.
- When you are older, you realise that everything else is just nothing compared to painting and drawing.
- Just because I’m cheeky, doesn’t mean I’m not serious.
- I can get excitement watching rain on a puddle. And then I paint it. Now, I admit, there are not too many people who would find that exciting. But I would. And I want life thrilling and rich. And it is. I make sure it is.
- The moment you cheat for the sake of beauty, you know you’re an artist.
