Christmas Day at Jacksons Lane
Tue 26 Nov 12PM
Each year, on Christmas Day, we host a Christmas meal for over 150 older and disabled people in the area, who would otherwise be spending Christmas Day alone.
I joined Jacksons Lane as the Development Officer in August this year, and quickly began to get involved with the project. Paul and Jan Brooker have organised the Christmas Day celebration here for over 30 years and do an incredible job.
Guests to the day are older or disabled people who would otherwise be spending Christmas alone, either because they are unable to travel to see family or friends, or because they no longer have anyone to go to.
A recent study by charity Age UK estimated that 450,000 people over the age of 65 face Christmas alone this year. Loneliness and social isolation has become a real issue amongst the older population, as Janet Morrison, chief executive of Independent Age, explains:
‘Loneliness is something which affects us all but older people are particularly vulnerable. This can be for many reasons, including losing their circle of friends or their spouse, having family who are far away, or problems with mobility, which may mean they simply can’t get out as much as they would like to.’
On Christmas Day at Jacksons Lane, we hope to provide over 150 older and disabled people with a really enjoyable, festive and sociable Christmas Day.
The day is entirely volunteer-led, and for many volunteers, helping out here has become as much of a tradition in their families as stockings, carols and cold turkey sandwiches on Boxing Day.
We have always relied on donations from the wider community to ensure this happens. We need to hire specialist transport for wheelchair users, provide each guest with a Christmas present to unwrap, deck out our spaces to make them as festive and cheerful as possible, and of course provide each guest with a delicious home cooked Christmas meal.
This year, we are raising funds through a scheme called the Big Give Christmas Challenge, which is a really brilliant and innovative way to see a donation go much further. Each donation made online through the Big Give has the potential to be doubled through funds donated by the Cabinet Office. So if you donated £10, the government would match your generosity and double it to £20!
However – we only have a limited time to make the most of this fantastic scheme.
Funds from the Cabinet office are released on Thursday 5th of December at 10am, then again on Friday 6th at the same time, and again on Saturday 7th December.
The match funds run out very quickly!
The Christmas Day project at Jacksons Lane is a very special one, and we hope it will be better than ever this year.
If you’d like to help make it happen, make your donation to Christmas Day at Jacksons Lane go even further. You can DONATE ONLINE HERE from Thursday 5th December at 10am.
Get in touch with our Box Office if you need any help donating, you can call them on 020 8341 4421.
Thank you in advance for your generosity.
